Rails Reduces the Number of Decisions When Building Web Applications

Simplifying computing infrastructure

Alex Bunardzic will present a session entitled "Rails Reduces the Number of Decisions When Building Web Applications" at the AJAXWorld Conference & Expo which will take place October 2-4, 2006, at the Santa Clara Convention Center, in Santa Clara, California.

Computing infrastructure required for running Web-based software is extremely complex. The number of decisions made on a typical Web application development project can be astronomical. Each decision incurs the price in terms of development and maintenance time. In addition, each infrastructure-related decision means one less business-related solution. Infrastructure-specific decisions do not add any value to the business solution.

Ruby on Rails, coupled with its streamlined implementation of AJAX, specializes in making top notch infrastructure-related decisions. Rails acts like a Smart Servant, offloading the nitty-gritty legwork and thus freeing the developers to focus on the business and human users-related matter. This orientation results in a dramatic increase in the quality of Rails-driven Web applications.

The presentation will focus on a step-by-step walkthrough of building a typical Web application. Decisions needed to reach a satisfactory solution will be discussed along the way. Once we deliver the fully functional, AJAX-driven upbeat product, we will summarize the number of decisions made. We will see that, compared to other platforms, Rails requires surprisingly few decisions in order to deliver a full-blown solution.

This conclusion will be used to support our claims that Rails is shaping up to be the de facto API for the Web.

Alex Bunardzic is a seasoned software developer, with 16 years of full-time experience building comprehensive software solutions. He specializes in delivering high-quality software products that are focused on helping users and businesses achieve their goals. To achieve and maintain high standards of delivery, Alex advocates the Less Technology/Less Infrastructure approach. This is why he embraces Ruby on Rails and AJAX, as these technologies allow him to deliver dramatically improved products in only a fraction of the time usually needed to supply such solutions.
