Google Reported Interested in ThinkFree

It sent its YouTube acquisition folks in to talk to the Korean concern lately

Rumor has it that Google is interested in ThinkFree, the HaanSoft-owned, ad-supported, Java-based, very Microsoft-like, Microsoft-compatible online office suite.

It sent its YouTube acquisition folks in to talk to the Korean concern lately. At least that's what HaanSoft's CEO has been telling the Korea Times.

ThinkFree consists of a word processor called Write, a spreadsheet called Calc and a presentation package called Show that are sprinkled with social networking features.

The stuff is segmented. There's ThinkFree Online, ThinkFree Desktop, ThinkFree Portable and a $30-a-year enterprise-minded ThinkFree Server Edition. Soon there's also supposed to be a paid ThinkFree Premium.

As you might have guessed, ThinkFree is moving to work both on- and off-line and on Linux, Windows, Unix and Intel Macs. It also says it's good on thin clients and handhelds like the iPod (well, at least for Show).

Reviewers say that while it feels like Microsoft ThinkFree is missing features, as might be expected, and its Microsoft compatibility is a bit dicey for advanced features. It's really only suitable for small documents.

Google bought Writely, the online word processor, and iRows, the online spreadsheet, and had its own in-house-developed Spreadsheets. It's brought them together as Docs and Spreadsheets to aggravate Microsoft and add to the speculation about the continued viability of packaged software as we know it.
