Creator of JSON Keynotes at AJAXWorld Conference & Expo

"AJAX is working primarily because JavaScript is turning out to be very, very powerful," says Yahoo! Architect Douglas Crockford

Speaking in the jam-packed Grand Ballroom of The Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, the creator of JSON, Yahoo! architect Douglas Crockford (pictured), this afternoon gave the Introductory Keynote at AJAXWorld 2007 East, in which he have a State of Union session setting the scene as to how Web development got to where it is now, and where it may be headed next.

Crockford began by explaining how, when the Browser Wars ended and Netscape sank, Microsoft disbanded the IE team and for 5 years and effectively left the market alone.

"People were already doing AJAX long before Jesse 'discovered' it," Crockford said. The result of Microsoft's non-involvement, he explained, was that Web developers ended up with a much more stable platform than was possible during the time of intense competition.

Even so the Web, which Crockford called "The most successful open system in history," is blighted by what he called "the appalling, incomplete state of standards - particularly around browsers."

Crockford's talk also covered the limitations of HTML and the weaknesses of CSS - which he described nonetheless as "what we have to work with."

He noted that AJAX is working primarily because JavaScript, which he always calls "The world's most misunderstood programming language," is turning out to be very, very powerful.
