AJAXWorld 2007 East: Creating a Game From Scratch with DWR

Live Demo Rounds Off Three Content-Rich Days at AJAXWorld Conference & Expo in New York

In a remarkable feat of live programming at AJAXWorld 2007 East in New York City, the Author of DWR (Direct Web Remoting) - Joe Walker - built a game application from scratch, making full use of DWR, a Java open source library which helps developers wanting to write web sites that include AJAX, allowing code in a web browser to use Java functions running on a web server as if those functions were within the browser.

Walker enlisted the on-stage coding assistance of TIBCO GI co-founder Kevin Hakman, in order that he could continue explaining and teaching to the attendees who had come to the Grand Ballroom of The Rosevelt Hotel to witness the daredevil session.

By the end of the session Walker has successfully created a web-based, multi-player game almost from scratch (the graphics used were created previously),e,  thus demonstrating how easy it is to AJAX-enable any application. Attendees were able to download the source to the game, and even play the game as it was being developed.

Before developing the game, Walker introduced  the basics of DWR, the "Reverse AJAX" functionality, and some of the advanced features like the remote proxy APIs.

He also looked at how DWR integrates with other AJAX frameworks like TIBCO GI and Script.aculo.us by building examples using these toolkits.
